What I see on the streets (4.0 mean) and stories on TV news (4.0 mean) are also the most effective tools for encouraging support for affordable housing. • Consistent with the most effective communication tool, social media (4.1 mean) is the most effective way for encouraging 18–25-year-olds to support affordable housing. • Seeing things on the streets (3.6 mean) is far and away the best way to encourage earners of less than $35,000 annually to support affordable housing. • Conversely, respondents with household income of at least $75,000 would be most encouraged to support affordable housing by seeing stories on TV news (3.8 mean) and reviewing local research that demonstrates the benefits of improving housing in their community (3.9 mean). • Females are most encouraged by stories on the TV news (3.9 mean compared to 4.2 for men), while men would be most encouraged to support affordable housing by what they see on the streets (3.9 mean). Among the total sample, studies showing costs of providing housing versus costs incurred by homelessness (3.2 mean) would be most effective at encouraging support for affordable housing. Voicing concern (4.0 mean) in a forum with decision makers would be least effective. • People with incomes of less than $35,000 per year indicate that meeting with residents of affordable housing to understand their stories (3.2 mean) would be most impactful at encouraging their support. • Females are also keen on meeting with residents of affordable housing (3.3 mean), along with providing success stories of residents who have overcome homelessness (3.3 mean), and studies showing the costs of affordable housing (3.3 mean). Males would be most encouraged by the studies showing costs (3.2 mean). There is no consensus on who is most effective in ensuring creation of affordable housing where it’s needed, though the slight majority (29%) believes it is federal-level housing programs.
