FCHC Annual Report 2015

Working Together to Ease Community Burdens

FISCAL YEAR 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

OUR MISSION

FCHC’s mission is to preserve and increase service enriched affordable rental housing, serve unmet needs, and help to ensure that low to moderate income people have housing they can afford.

Falls Church Housing Corporation (FCHC): Working Together to Ease Community Burdens

2015 WAS A MILESTONE YEAR IN SEVERAL WAYS. It marked FCHC’s 35th anniversary. It was also the 40th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant program, a milestone we celebrated with the City of Falls Church and past block grant recipients. In the last year we have strengthened our commitment to working with the City of Falls Church on meeting the needs of this community. FCHC has been honored to join with the City to be a part of its consolidated plan. We worked together to create an emergency heating and cooling center for senior and disabled citizens of Falls Church. In close coordination with the Fire Marshal and other City officials, we were able to address that particular unmet need while increasing the effectiveness of our public/private partnership. Another example of our partnership with the City’s was the underwriting of a stipend to keep a highly regarded intern in place to work on the City’s consolidated plan. This member-funded support was made possible through the generosity of FCHC’s 2015 Financial Partners acknowledged in this annual report. The City’s intern, did an exceptional job helping to bring into sharp focus the critical challenges FCHC and the City are working together to address. Currently in Falls Church, 41% of the citizens renting their homes and 20% of the homeowners fall within HUD’s “cost-burdened” definition, households paying more than 30% of their income on housing. Those numbers are unacceptable. What’s equally unacceptable is the fact that those housing cost burdens are being borne by teachers, firefighters, police officers, members of the clergy, health care providers, and many other low to moderate income valued members of our community. In order to meet anther City need, FCHC was very pleased to be able to lease a three-office suite to CASA de Virginia at a deeply discounted rate for 2015 and beyond. CASA now has a conveniently located place to offer legal services to the immigrant community of Falls Church.

We have made great strides at working together and we can and we must do more to ease the burdens of our neighbors in need of affordable housing in Falls Church.

Financial Partners AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2015

A large and unacceptable number of Falls Church households are considered “cost-burdened,” paying more than 30% of their income on housing. Those numbers are unacceptable. What’s equally unacceptable is the fact that those housing cost burdens are being borne by teachers, firefighters, police officers, members of the clergy, health care providers, and other low to moderate income valued members of our community.

2015 has marked another year of great partnership for FCHC a Virginia Community Development Corporation. We truly value the generosity of each and every partner acknowledged in this annual report. FCHC is committed to expanding our partner relationships in the coming years and building on this foundation of support.
